Boxing and Philosophy, and Winemaking!

  • Nan Bailly has been the winemaker at Alexis Bailly Vineyard for 30 years, starting with her apprenticeship in the Loire Valley in France where she first learned the fine art of washing wine barrels.  Her winemaking experiences have been honed by stints in the Cotes du Rhone of southern France and in the Finger Lakes of upstate New York, all leading back to Minnesota where she carries on the romantic notion of making wines in the world’s most difficult wine making region.

  • Gordon Marino took his undergraduate degree from Columbia University and his doctorate from the Committee on Social Thought, at the University of Chicago. After teaching stints at Harvard and Yale (where he was also an assistant football coach) Marino taught philosophy and psychology at Virginia Military Institute. A former boxer himself, Marino was head coach of the VMI boxing team. Marino trains both amateurs and professionals in Minnesota. He is an award winning boxing writer for the Wall Street Journal. His articles have also appeared in The Atlantic Monthly Newsweek, New York Times Magazine and many other nationally circulating publications. Marino’s mentor in the sweet science was Angelo Dundee, the man who trained Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, and a dozen other world champions.  He writes regularly for The New York Times:
